Results from Kaplan’s 2024 law school admissions officers survey show that the vast majority of law schools still have no official policies regulating how prospective students can use artificial intelligence in a critical piece of their application: the admissions essay, which law schools say can be the “biggest application dealbreaker,” if not written well, behind a low standardized test score, but ahead of low college GPA*. Among the specifics:

A new survey from global educational services provider Kaplan of more than 200 college admissions officers finds that 75 percent believe college and university rankings have “lost some of their prestige over the last couple of years.”* This represents a significant increase from the 56 percent who held this view in Kaplan’s 2023 survey. These results come on the heels of U.S. News & World Report releasing its highly anticipated 2025 rankings today, September 24. It also comes at a time when some of the country’s most selective colleges and universities, including Columbia, which cited the rankings’ “outsized influence” in the admissions process, have stopped participating, or are threatening to no longer participate.

The biggest change to hit the real estate industry in more than 30 years is being greeted with mixed reactions by the audience most impacted. Before the changes went into effect on August 17, seller’s agents and buyer’s agents would split a commission based upon the final price of the home sale. But now, buyer’s agents' commissions depend on what they negotiate with buyers themselves, who never before had to pay their agents directly. This all changed because of a landmark federal court ruling, which compelled the National Association of Realtors to upend the long-existing system.

A new Manhattan Prep/Kaplan survey of more than 300 aspiring MBA students finds mixed attitudes toward GenAI and its use in the admissions process.* Of those polled, 56 percent think they should be allowed to use AI tools to help them write their admissions essays, but only with certain guidelines and restrictions; 20 percent don’t think they should be allowed under any circumstances; 18 percent said use should be unrestricted; the remaining 7 percent were unsure. A separate Manhattan Prep/Kaplan survey of business school admissions officers found that only a handful of business schools have policies in place directing students how they can use AI in their admissions essays, signaling the issue is still unsettled.**

University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), the only Jesuit and Mercy university in the country, announced today that a new partnership with global educational services provider Kaplan is now providing all of its students with free test prep courses for graduate-level admissions exams, including the GRE®, GMAT®, LSAT®, MCAT® and DAT®, and free test prep for professional licensing exams including the bar exam, INBDE®, NCLEX-RN® exam, and Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE®). Results from a new Manhattan Prep/Kaplan survey of more than 300 aspiring business school students show that 55 percent of respondents believe that the rankings "have lost some of their prestige over the last couple of years”; 21 percent don’t believe that to be the case, while 24 percent aren’t sure.* But while most agree that prestige has been waning, they nearly unanimously (97 percent) say that a business school’s ranking will be critical to them in deciding where to ultimately enroll, with 65 percent calling it “very important” and 32 percent calling it “somewhat important.” U.S. News & World Report released their 2024 rankings on April 9.

Results from Kaplan’s latest law school admissions officers survey show that 51 percent of law schools across the United States believe that the U.S. News & World Report rankings — the 2024 list was just released today — "have lost some of their prestige over the last couple of years”; 18 percent do not believe this to be the case, while the remaining 31 percent don’t take a position.* The survey results come after a number of top-tier schools — including Harvard, Yale, UC Berkeley, and Northwestern Pritzker School of Law — announced decisions to no longer actively participate, citing concerns over methodology and other issues. In total, around 25 percent of law schools no longer actively participate, according to some counts.

The new digital SAT debuts on March 9, and with it, the biggest changes to hit the exam in its 100 year history, including:

Yale University announced today that it will join a growing number of top colleges and universities across the United States that are reinstating the requirement that prospective students submit scores from standardized tests, including the SAT® or ACT®; but the university also said it will permit applicants to submit scores from subject-based Advanced Placement® or International Baccalaureate® tests in lieu of SAT or ACT scores, as part of what they are calling a “flexible testing policy.” In announcing its decision, Yale said evaluating applicants without test scores “worked to the disadvantage of applicants from lower socio-economic backgrounds.” On February 5, Dartmouth College became the first Ivy League school to bring back the standardized testing requirement. And results from Kaplan’s 2023 college admissions officers survey find that these schools may not be alone for long*. Of the more than 200 test optional schools Kaplan surveyed late last year, 15 percent said they are considering reinstating or will definitely reinstate the requirement.

The vast majority of colleges and universities are taking a hands off approach, so far, when it comes to the use of generative AI programs like ChatGPT in both the admissions and recruitment processes, according to a new survey by global educational services provider Kaplan*. The survey’s findings come at a time when schools are increasingly exploring its use in both admissions and academics. Among the findings, according to the more than 200 admissions officers polled:

Let the record show that 58 percent of pre-law students say that it’s important for them to attend a law school where their fellow students generally hold the same political/social views as they do, according to a new survey by global educational services provider Kaplan; 36 percent say it’s not important; and the remaining 6 percent aren’t sure*. This marks a significant increase from the last time Kaplan released a survey on this issue in early 2020, when only 46 percent said it was important. The verdict is in: 66 percent of pre-law students rule that law school applicants shouldn’t be allowed to use ChatGPT or other GenAI tools to help them write their admissions essays, according to a survey by global educational services provider Kaplan; 14 percent say they should be allowed to use it, while the remaining 20 percent aren’t sure*. The results come as a trickle of JD programs begin to announce school-specific policies, with some like the University of Michigan Law School explicitly banning applicants from using GenAI, while others like the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University explicitly allowing it. But preliminary results from Kaplan’s 2023 law school admissions officers survey find that the majority of schools have yet to implement any policy regarding the role that GenAI can or cannot play in applicants’ admissions essays.

The decision by some top law schools to exit the rankings hasn’t led to anything similar among business schools (yet), but if it did, many admissions officers would welcome it, according to Manhattan Prep/Kaplan’s 2022 business school admissions officers survey*. Among the admissions officers surveyed at 117 full-time MBA programs across the United States, 37 percent believe that “business school rankings have lost some of their prestige over the last couple of years” and 29 percent disagree with that point of view; the remaining 34 percent didn’t express one view or the other. Additionally, 34 percent of business schools “think it would be a positive development, for both business schools and applicants, for business school rankings to no longer exist,” while 30 percent disagree; the remaining 36 percent didn’t express one view or the other.

The 2021 Kaplan/Manhattan Prep business school admissions officers survey finds an increasing percentage of full-time MBA programs across the U.S. securing STEM designation, though universal adoption appears to be a long way off*. According to the admissions officers surveyed, 22 percent say their programs are currently designated as STEM programs, a significant increase from the 2020 survey, which found only 13 percent were designated as STEM programs; 23 percent say that while their programs aren’t currently STEM, they plan to go through the curriculum overhaul and rigorous approval process to secure that designation; the remaining 55 percent say they are not STEM designated and have no plans to pursue it.
