The Association for Program Administrators (APACS) of CSTEP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program) and STEP (Science and Technology Entry Program), Inc., which represents administrators of New York’s CSTEP and STEP programs, has partnered with global educational services provider Kaplan. As part of the partnership, Kaplan will provide CSTEP’s undergraduate students pursuing careers in STEM, health, and licensed fields at 27 of its campuses with free test prep courses for graduate-level admissions exams, including the GRE®, GMAT®, LSAT®, MCAT® and DAT®. Through Kaplan’s All Access License, students from APACS member institutions also have the opportunity to take a number of technical and soft skills-building courses to help them prepare for their next steps after graduation. Among the 27 participating CSTEP schools are Fordham University, Hofstra University, Binghamton University, Stony Brook University, University at Albany, University at Buffalo, SUNY Old Westbury, City College of New York, College of Staten Island, and John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Albion College, the top liberal arts school in the Midwest and ranked first in the state for providing an excellent student experience and social mobility for its graduates, both per The Wall Street Journal, announced today that a new partnership with global educational services provider Kaplan is now providing all of its students, faculty, staff, and alumni with free test prep courses for graduate-level admissions exams, including the GRE®, GMAT®, LSAT®, and MCAT®. Additionally, they will have access to a suite of skills-development courses that they can take for free with Kaplan, on topics ranging from career readiness to data literacy.

The City University of New York School of Law announces that it will provide all of its graduating students with free comprehensive test prep for the bar exam through an expanded partnership with global educational services provider Kaplan. 2024 CUNY Law graduates will be the first to benefit from the partnership. In addition to comprehensive bar review for all CUNY Law students, Kaplan will also provide the school with enhanced curriculum support to benefit all students throughout their law school journey.

Kaplan has launched a Buyer Agency Professional (BAP) designation to help buyer agents succeed as they face a drastically different real estate business model on the horizon. A landmark federal court ruling in October 2023 has resulted in the National Association of Realtors announcing on March 15, 2024 a settlement in the class action lawsuit, upending a system in place for generations and shifting the burden of how buyer agents get paid to buyer agents themselves. Now they’ll have to negotiate their commission with their clients, who will have to pay them directly, potentially causing significant early friction. For more than three decades, in most states, the business has worked like this: Seller agents and buyer agents split a commission based upon the final price of the home sale, pre-decided on and paid for by the seller. The home purchaser generally has never had to even think about this part of the process…until now.

Kaplan’s 2023 college admissions officers survey shows that 67 percent believe that checking out applicants’ social media posts on apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, and Threads to learn more about them is “fair game” to help them make decisions about who gets in, but just 28 percent say they’ve actually done it*. While that 28 percent nearly matches what it was in Kaplan’s survey five years ago, the “fair game” POV has jumped significantly from 57 percent in the same time frame. Taking the contrarian view, 33 percent of admissions officers consider viewing applicants’ social media “an invasion of privacy and shouldn’t be done,” according to the 2023 survey.

Results from Kaplan’s 2023 law school admissions officers find that last year’s Supreme Court decision banning affirmative action in admissions is causing consternation about their ability to create a racially diverse student body*. The positive news though is that according to new data from the Law School Admission Council, the current national law school applicant pool includes more than 43 percent people of color — the highest percentage on record, although the cycle isn’t over yet. Among the findings from the Kaplan survey, which includes responses from 85 law schools:

Kaplan’s 2021 college admissions officers survey shows that a near record percentage of admissions officers think that applicants’ social media postings are “fair game” to help determine who gets in*. Of the hundreds of admissions officers surveyed, 66 percent (up 9 points since 2018) see no issue with social media being part of the admissions equation, a point of view that has gained support in recent years. In Kaplan’s 2020 survey, 65 percent reported they had a “fair game” view; in 2019, it was 59 percent, while the 2018 survey found it to only be 57 percent, and 68 percent in 2017, a high water mark. Taking the contrarian view, 34 percent of admissions officers consider viewing applicants’ social media “an invasion of privacy and shouldn’t be done.”

The 2021 Kaplan/Manhattan Prep business school admissions officers survey finds an evolving role for the GMAT®, GRE®, and Executive Assessment® in the business school admissions process, possibly giving applicants a strategic advantage*. According to admissions officers at nearly 100 full-time MBA programs across the United States, 67 percent currently waive the admissions exam requirement amid test taking challenges caused by the COVID-10 pandemic, including 34 percent who say their school may make the waiver permanent. But at the same time, 88 percent of exam-waiving schools say that submitting a competitive admissions exam score helps a prospective student’s application; these admissions officers explained their reasoning:

Up 26 percent at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; up 30 percent at Howard University College of Medicine; and at Tulane University School of Medicine, up a whopping 35 percent. All across the United States, applications to medical school increased this past year, and according to a new Kaplan survey, that trend won’t be reversed in the 2021–2022 admissions cycle*. Of the admissions officers surveyed, 50 percent predict that the number of applicants will stay at last cycle’s elevated volume; 33 percent think that number will increase; and only 17 percent believe there will be a decrease in applicants. But while the pandemic-era applicant surge points to another extra competitive admissions cycle, 88 percent say they have made their admissions process more flexible due to the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on everything from MCAT® testing dates to securing the recommended number of clinical hours. This is similar to Kaplan’s finding from 2020, when 93 percent noted increased flexibility.

To help inspire generational kindness by providing students with the opportunity to learn about and encourage its practice, Kaplan has launched The Kindness Curriculum, a free program designed for K-12 students, in the U.S. The program, designed by Kaplan in partnership with The Kindness Factory, was first introduced to 69 pilot schools across Australia in May 2020. Since then, the program has been adopted by nearly 3,000 schools across Australia and is now being introduced to the U.S.

With the fall semester underway and COVID’s Delta variant raging across many parts of the country, a new Kaplan survey, conducted by College Pulse, finds overwhelming support among college students for vaccine and mask mandates on campus*. Of the 1,001 college students across the United States polled this month, 72 percent support colleges requiring students to be vaccinated if they want to attend in-person classes. This is a slight increase from a previous Inside Higher Ed/College Pulse Student Voice survey completed in May, which was sponsored by Kaplan, when 69 percent supported a vaccine mandate. The survey findings come on the heels of a number of colleges reporting a spike in COVID cases, forcing them to temporarily pivot back to remote learning.

Of the more than 2,000 college students polled, 79 percent support (54 percent “strongly”; 25 percent “somewhat”) the end of legacy admissions. The call to egalitarianism comes in the aftermath of the Varsity Blues scandal and, more recently, the move by the state of Colorado banning legacy admissions for all state colleges and universities.

The survey reveal comes on the heels of an increasing number of colleges, including large university systems such as the University of California, California State, and State University of New York and top-ranked Harvard, Yale, and Brown, announcing that vaccines will be mandated for all students who want to return to campus this fall.
