New York OPWDD Support For People With Cerebral Palsy: Service Expanded

New York will allocate an additional $3.5 million to family support programs for residents with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities this fall. Home Care Advisory Group announces expanded services helping individuals apply for these benefits from the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.

-- The expansion comes shortly after OPWDD’s announcement that it would reallocate funding to family support services for individuals with developmental disabilities who are living at home beginning in November 2025. Home Care Advisory Group offers New York residents assistance in qualifying for and obtaining OPWDD services.

The OPWDD announced in late April it was seeking proposals to boost the variety and availability of programs to these individuals. The expanded services aim to address unmet needs and offset the challenges families of children with developmental disabilities face. Unserved and underserved families will take priority, especially in regions where services are scarce.

To benefit from these expanded services, individuals must qualify for OPWDD programs. The experts at Home Care Advisory Group are familiar with eligibility criteria and the application process. Applicants must meet specific age, diagnosis, and residency requirements. Individuals with cerebral palsy and other qualifying developmental disabilities occurring before age 22 are typically found eligible.

OPWDD provides families with support opportunities such as respite care, counseling, and education to help caretakers manage the load. The office also offers daily living support, assisting with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, cooking, and managing medication schedules. Some individuals qualify for skills development and educational opportunities, which help promote independence.

These OPWDD programs are more than just a convenience - they can transform homes, a Home Care Advisory Group representative said. The resources and independence they offer allow special needs individuals to achieve their goals and pursue meaningful, satisfying lives. This, in turn, allows families to do the same.

“Families benefit as well, knowing that their loved ones are receiving the care and support they need,” a company representative said. “This peace of mind allows families to engage more fully in their communities and everyday activities, knowing their loved one is well cared for.”
