The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Commits $5 Million in Matching Gift to Children’s Minnesota’s Family Needs

Best Buy TM founder’s family foundation hopes to inspire additional giving to Children’s Minnesota.

Children’s Minnesota is thrilled to announce the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation has committed a $5 million matching gift to the health system’s family needs program. This is the largest gift the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation has donated to Children’s Minnesota. The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation gift happens now through Dec. 31, 2026, matching donations to the Children’s Minnesota Together for Families Fund.

"At Children’s Minnesota, our every day is often a family’s once in a lifetime. That is why it is so important that we go beyond exceptional medical care and provide essential wraparound services for the whole family,” said Jenny Soderholm, president of the Children’s Minnesota Foundation. “We’re incredibly honored by the generosity of the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation in matching all gifts to the Together for Families Fund to support our wraparound services. A challenge like this not only inspires our broader generous donor community but gives us an opportunity to share why these funds are so necessary.”

This match supports families in several ways. Every donation to the Children’s Minnesota Together for Families Fund, matched by the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, helps families access care with dignity. Gifts to the fund allow Children’s Minnesota to:

  • Provide financial assistance to families facing hardships during medical crises. This includes providing meals, hotel stays, transportation services, housing support and more.
  • Offer essential wraparound care like music and art therapy, social workers, child life specialists, medical dogs, grief support and spiritual care – services that help families cope with hospitalization or treatment but never show up on a patient’s bill.

“Our foundation is honored to support Children’s Minnesota as they continue to care for children across our region,” said Mark Dienhart, president and CEO of the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. “Part of our foundation’s mission is to strengthen and support effective initiatives in health care. Helping fund these family needs is a critical part of this mission.”
